Visit Kentucky Down Under for Australian-style Fun

If you’ve always dreamed of traveling to Australia, but you happen to be in south-central Kentucky, Kentucky Down Under is an ideal place to enjoy a compromise.  Kentucky Down Under is located between Nashville, Tennessee and Louisville, Kentucky and gives visitors a chance to meet and interact with some of Australia’s most intriguing animals.  At the Camp Corroboree exhibit, visitors can also learn about Aboriginal culture.

There are several unique attractions at Kentucky Down Under.  The Discovery Areas features lizards, snakes and other interesting creatures.  You will see a variety of reptiles here, including a 14-foot Burmese Python and a colorful Green Tree Python.  There is a friendly Bearded Dragon and Blue-tongue Skink to see as well.  At scheduled times, you can get to know some of these creatures with hands-on interactions.

The Aviary is a terrific place to meet and feed lorikeets. Over a dozen lorikeets live in this giant Aviary, and they are very friendly as well as colorful birds.  Hold a cup of nectar and you will quickly attract lorikeets eager to perch right on hour arms, shoulders or even your head to enjoy their snack. In the Bird Garden, you can see other fascinating birds from Australia, including the Laughing Kookaburra.

The Outback at Kentucky Down Under is where you will meet kangaroos, wallabies, emu and other fascinating birds.  On a guided tour, you will have a very close encounter with three species of kangaroos and three different types of wallabies.  You will also see beautiful black swans and the stunning white ibis.

You will also enjoy visiting the Woolshed at Kentucky Down Under.  Here you will see border collies at work herding sheep and enjoy hands-on experiences with several farm animals.  You can feed lambs, milk a cow and watch the entertaining and educational Parade of Rams presentation.  There are also many domestic animals to see and pet at the newest exhibit at Kentucky Down Under, Taraba Station.

A wonderful way to end your day at Kentucky Down Under is with a tour of Kentucky Caverns located on site.  The Caverns were first discovered in 1799, and public tours have been offered since 1922.  Today, Kentucky Caverns tours are offered throughout the day, and each tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.  During the tour, you will see incredible cave formations up close.  There are many stalagmites and stalactites to see in this active cave.

There is a Gift Shop at Kentucky Down Under where you can select a souvenir, and the Outback Cafe is the perfect place to enjoy a bite to eat.  Everything you need to enjoy a wonderful day of fun learning about Australia and Kentucky Caverns is located on site.  Plan to spend a full day at Kentucky Down Under so you have a chance to enjoy all of its wonderful attractions.

We recommend that you bypass this park. For the price, it's just not worth it. Our family spent nearly $100, anticipating a great day of educational fun for the kids. The ONLY exhibit they enjoyed was feeding the birds. Our guide for the Outback Walkabout was horrible, and spent more time trying to come up with jokes about how Australia was the source of all science fiction movies than she did actually providing information about the animals. When asked basic questions, she couldn't answer….it was the worst 25 minutes we'd ever spent. Overall, we had far more fun at the less expensive attractions, and will NEVER return to KDU.

Now I'm impressed. Can't edit or redact my previous statement, so posting an update. KDU responded to my email with an apology, full refund and tickets to revisit the park and give them another chance.

Got something to say?
