The Speed Art Museum Showcases Impressive Art Collections

On your next visit to Louisville, Kentucky, spend a day at the Speed Art Museum.  This is a huge art museum with an expansive collection of more than 12,000 pieces of artwork.  The Speed Art Museum displays items from its own collection as well as hosting temporary exhibits featuring art from other museums around the world.

The Speed Art Museum’s collection includes a huge variety of artwork that spans thousands of years.  You can see artwork from ancient Egypt, contemporary art, and everything in between.  There are many fascinating exhibitions to explore on a visit to this museum.

If you’re interested in American art, you’ll be impressed with the Speed Art Museum’s vast collection of American paintings and sculpture.  You can see paintings by many renowned American artists, including impressionist works, still-life paintings, figure paintings and drawings.  The Speed Art Museum also has many different types of American sculpture works on display. 

The Speed Art Museum has a large collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts created by artists from Kentucky, as well as art made for Kentuckians during the 19th century.  Portraiture was a popular art form at this time and features prominently in the Museum’s Kentucky Collection exhibit.  In terms of decorative art, unique and beautiful items created by silversmiths and cabinetmakers are on display at the Speed Art Museum. 

The Native American Gallery at the Speed Art Museum contains many fascinating ceremonial objects and artifacts created by members of several tribes that resided in the Great Plains region of North America.  The Native American exhibit features intricate and beautiful beadwork, painting and quillwork. 

There is also an impressive African Art exhibition at the Speed Art Museum, featuring objects created by artists and craftspeople from West and Central Africa.  Many of the items in the African Art collection are from the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Another collection exhibited at the Speed Art Museum showcases Art of the Ancient World.  This includes Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian items dating from approximately 4000 BC to 400 AD.  Some of the objects in the collection are very rare, such as Roman burial urns, Greek vases and Egyptian pottery. 

Two other impressive art exhibitions at The Speed Art Museum include a gallery showcasing Modernist works and one featuring artwork by contemporary artists working in a huge variety of media.

This is a sampling of some the exhibitions on display at the Speed Art Museum. The Museum also houses an extensive collection of European painting and sculpture, American and European decorative art, and much more.  In addition, visitors will enjoy seeing special exhibits on loan as well as additional permanent galleries at this spectacular museum.
