Bluegrass Heritage Museum - Winchester, Kentucky
Take a trip to the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky and you will see the beauty of rolling grassland, wood and stone fences, horses and some of the most beautiful country anyplace. There is so much history in the area that you will truly have the opportunity to learn a great deal while enjoying the beauty. The National Geographic named the Bluegrass Region one of America's 50 must-see places so don't miss the opportunity to visit.
The Museum brings the history of the area to life with it's collections and exhibits that tell the story of the Winchester, Clark County and the Bluegrass region of Kentucky.
The building that houses the Museum is the Guerrant Clinic. Here you will learn about the Eskippakithiki Indian and the people that still live in the area today. As America's first Western frontier it attracted those that were in search for new adventures such as Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton.
This area is the burley tobacco capital of the world. The Museum tells the storied history of how this crop not only helped to shape the economy of America but developed a specific culture and way of life that lives to today. You will see small family tobacco farms intermixed with the ornate mansions of the regions thoroughbred horse farms and the beauty of the area.
Not only is the area known for its tobacco fields but the stories of the Wilderness Trail. The riverboat industry that grew from this area with barges and flatboats transported lumber from the forest of Eastern Kentucky to provide the nation with both wood and coal. Once they left the river they were loaded on railcars and shipped throughout America.
Modern days have seen the economy change from coal and lumber to Toyotas and bourbon, Lexmark printers to Ale 8-one soft drinks.
Exhibits on the first floor of the Museum showcases the Winchester Fire Department, schools of Clark County, artifacts from Lower Howard's Creek, photographs by A.J. Earp and both photos and news articles describing Hollar's Grocery.
Galleries on the second floor consist of a Military History Room in which Clark Countians who served from the American Revolutionary War to World War II are honored and a Bell South Room which interprets the history of the telephone on the national and local level.
